Chaos in the Skies: Protests and Strikes Ground Flights in Belgium
Major disruptions unfolded in Belgium as nationwide strikes and protests brought two key airports to a standstill, impacting air travel and public transport. The situation escalated, with police resorting to tear gas and water cannons to manage the crowds. This event, fueled by disagreements over Belgium's reform plans, caused significant inconvenience for travelers and residents alike.
Minor clashes between police and demonstrators added to the unrest. Protesters, armed with drums, horns, flares, and smoke bombs, voiced their opposition to cuts in social welfare programs. These demonstrations brought the heart of the Belgian capital to a standstill, blocking major roads and causing widespread traffic jams. As a direct result of the strikes, numerous flights were canceled, leaving many travelers stranded.
Organizers estimated that over 150,000 people participated in the protests, while police figures placed the crowd at 80,000. This disparity highlights the varying perspectives on the scale of the demonstrations. Police were seen detaining protesters, some in plain clothes but identified by red armbands, using plastic bands to restrain them. At one point, officers on bicycles sought refuge inside a hotel to avoid the large group of protesters.
The protests, which began in Brussels, between Gare du Nord and Gare du Midi train stations, were organized by Belgium's three major trade organizations. The demonstrators blocked busy roads, leading to the detention of approximately 25 people for setting fires on Brussels' boulevards.
Brussels Airport issued a warning to flyers, anticipating potential cancellations of departing passenger flights. "Due to the national industrial action on Tuesday 14 October in which the staff of the security service provider is participating, we unfortunately expect major disruptions to our airport operations on that day," the airport announced on its website. The airport was in talks with airlines, urging them to avoid operating departing flights on the specified day. Consequently, cancellations were also expected for some arriving flights.
Major airline Brussels Airlines heeded the warning, stating, "We are forced to cancel all departing flights and a significant number of arriving flights that day." In 2024, approximately 23.6 million passengers traveled through Brussels Airport. Charleroi Airport, the second-largest in the country, also canceled flights due to staffing shortages.
