NASCAR's 2026 Power Bump: A Mixed Bag for Cup Drivers
NASCAR Cup drivers are divided over the upcoming horsepower increase for 2026, with some praising the move and others expressing caution. The announcement came just days before the Las Vegas race weekend, revealing a significant boost in power from 670 to 750 horsepower on specific tracks and road/street courses.
NASCAR's Chief Racing Development Officer, John Probst, explained that this change is part of a broader package, including tire modifications. He stated, 'We've been working on the tires, and we believe we've achieved some impressive short-track races. These new engines will further enhance tire interaction.'
Christopher Bell, a driver, expressed enthusiasm for the horsepower increase, especially when combined with the new tires from Goodyear. He recalled a time when cars were 'locked down' on road courses, but noted a significant improvement at the Charlotte road course the previous week. Bell emphasized, 'With more horsepower, it's going to be a game-changer.'
Joey Logano shared a similar sentiment, praising Goodyear's recent tire developments. He mentioned that the tires are now more prone to wear, which will be amplified by the increased horsepower. Logano added, 'Goodyear's tire choices are the key factor in this equation.'
However, Kyle Larson, who races a high-performance 1,400-pound Sprint Car, urged a more measured approach. He stated, 'The increase in horsepower isn't that dramatic. I recently tested at Kershaw, South Carolina, and didn't notice a significant difference.'
Logano also highlighted the technical challenges NASCAR faces in implementing a higher horsepower limit. He explained, 'It's not a simple fix. Removing the tapered spacer and increasing power is not a straightforward process. There are numerous technical considerations.'
Despite the mixed reactions, the changes are expected to bring excitement and new dynamics to the sport, with drivers and fans alike eagerly awaiting the 2026 season.
